Years 7 and 8
Years 7 & 8
The Year 7&8 department at Chanel College gives students the opportunity to develop their learning in an environment where they feel safe, secure and supported. We are a caring and compact department where students have the security of form rooms and class room teachers as well as the opportunity to receive specialised teaching from teachers in the College part of the school. We are also privileged to have small class sizes where students receive excellent levels of teaching and support from our dedicated teaching staff.
Spending two years with us in Year 7&8 allows students an easier transition into the College area of the school. They have an understanding of how the school operates, they have often already been taught by the teachers before and they already have friendship groups with their peers as well as having made many friends with senior students. Finally and most importantly they already feel 100% part of the Chanel College family.
In our ever developing world the young people in our department are definitely the ‘Technological generation’ and because of this one of the goals in our teaching is to ensure our teaching fits with this. Using video clips, moving animations, interactive quizzes, student led activities as well as having instant Internet access has meant the teaching and learning has moved into our technology orientated 21st Century.
In our department we place an emphasis on the teaching of the core areas of Literacy and Numeracy. Students are taught these key subject areas every day.
Being a Catholic school, Religious Education is valued extremely highly and students receive three periods of teaching each week which involves the teaching of values with a specific focus upon the wonderful role model, Jesus Christ. As a school we also hold daily prayers, weekly liturgies and termly masses.
The advantage of being able to progress students seamlessly from Year 7 to Year 10 in prearation for NCEA cannot be underestimated. Our aim is to provide a wide and varied curriculum across many other subject areas that will offer many opportunities for our students. To do this we utilise not only the skills of our Year 7&8 teachers but also the opportunities given through being part of a secondary school where students are taught subjects by specialist teachers. During their time with us students will study the subject areas of:
