Maori

Year 9 Maori (1/2 year course of  2 periods each week)

This course aims to enable Year 9 students to communicate in Te Reo Māori about themselves, their whanau and their home environment. Topics covered will further emphasise the language and tikanga practises studied in Years 7 and 8. Students will learn about Māori tikanga issues, protocols and practices including the roles of Marae and Māori performance. A willingness to participate in the learning of waiata and haka is necessary and students would benefit from being performing members of the Chanel College Cultural Group, although this is not compulsory.

Year 10 Maori  (full year 2 periods each week)

This option is an expansion of the work covered in Year 8 and 9. Topics studied will further emphasise the language and tikanga practises studied. Students will learn about Māori tikanga issues, protocols and practices including the roles of Marae and Māori performance. A willingness to participate in the learning of waiata and haka is necessary and students would benefit from being performing members of the Chanel College Cultural Group, although this is not compulsory. 

Maori Language, Tikanga and Performing Arts Level 1

 Maori Language, Tikanga and Performing Arts Level 1 Maori Language, Tikanga and Performing Arts is the study of the Maori culture including language, traditional tikanga concepts, issues and practises, Marae protocol, and Maori Performance aspects including but not confined to Moteatea, Waiata a Ringa, Poi, Haka, and Haka Wahine. The performance aspect of the course will be delivered in the context of the Chanel College Cultural Group where students are assessed on aspects of their participation in the group’s performances. Assessment standards will be selected to suit student interest and abilities.
